Denmark:
sits like a star atop the European continent, the geographic and cultural link to Scandinavia and the gateway to the Baltic. It`s thoroughly European, yet distinctively Danish. One of the smallest countries in Europe, it has the oldest capital city and the oldest flag. Denmark presents visitors with an embarrassment of riches, everything from exciting Copenhagen to historic castles, unusual offshore islands, and quaint villages. Denmark is composed of 406 islands (97 of them inhabited) and a relatively low mainland called Jylland. Denmark`s only land border is with Germany, to the south, and neighbours Sweden and Norway lie just across the straits that join the Baltic and North Seas. The largest island, Sjaelland, is where Copenhagen, the country`s capital and largest city, is located. The nation`s flat landscape is relieved by rolling hills, fields and meadows, alternating with pine and beech forests, dunes and beaches. Remnants of its royal past are readily apparent in Denmark`s stately castles, gardens, and manor houses. When it was built in 1585, Kronborg Castle, the backdrop for Shakespeare`s Hamlet, was the finest castle in northern Europe. Spottrup Castle (1450-1500), with its unique double moat, is one of the most impressive medieval fortresses in Scandinavia. Ledreborg Castle (I 743), set in a 2 00-acre river valley, is known for its magnificent terraced gardens, no mean feat in a country where the land never rises more than 500 feet above sea level. Danish cities are filled with gracious plazas, statues, fountains, gardens crisscrossed with wide, tree-lined walkways, open-air markets, and flower vendors on street corners, museums, galleries, and little cafes offering strong coffee and delectable pastries. In Copenhagen, the traditional changing of the guard ceremony takes place in front of the queen`s palace. Like its people, the country`s sights are impressive without being imposing. Copenhagen, the country`s capital, is a good example: It`s a modern, international city that has managed to remain cozy and compact -- most of the sights are only a short walk away. Outside Copenhagen, the countryside offers graceful castles, stout churches and small fishing villages. Tops on the must-see list are the graceful statue of Hans Christian Andersen`s Little Mermaid and Tivoli Gardens, a charming all-ages `pleasure park` in the heart of the city. After that, the choice is yours. Visit the Danish crown jewels at Rosenborg Palace. Attend a performance of the Royal Danish Ballet. Or take a break in the Danish countryside. Getting around couldn`t be easier. Danish trains are clean, fast and efficient. `Wonderful` Copenhagen is one of the world`s great walking cities. A cozy European capital, it`s filled with stunning architecture — classic and modern, historic sites, world-class museums, and some of the best shopping and dining in Europe. Because Denmark is so compact you can get from city to city or city to country, in no time at all. That leaves plenty of opportunity to enjoy the many pleasures of this friendly `oasis` in Europe. The terrain connecting these sights makes touring the countryside on a bicycle a pleasant. Visitors who have been to other Scandinavian countries find the Danes to be surprisingly open. Sit for a while at an inn or bar and you may soon find yourself surrounded by friends: Most residents speak English and seem to make it a point to talk to travelers. Warm-hearted, fun-loving and free-spirited, Denmark is a traveler`s delight.
